Geo4Food

Water-Energy-Food Nexus: Geothermal water for agriculture

About Project

Through production of safe and adequate amount of water, Geo4Food aims to ensure sustainable development in agriculture sector. Geo4Food meets the mutual benefit requirement of bilateral cooperation by offering energy efficient solutions to mutual problem of irrigation water scarcity.

Objectives

In order to achieve safe, clean and sustainable irrigation water, Geo4Food has set couple of objectives:

  1. To establish management of low-enthalpy geothermal waters as a source of energy and water for agricultural production in the Polish and Turkish agriculture sectors.
  2. Geological and hydrogeological data analysis for geothermal sources will be done comparatively with aquifer resources and crop-related data in agricultural areas of Poland and Turkey.
  3. Preparation of the superimposed maps of agricultural areas along with potential use of geothermal sources.
  4. Laboratory research for creating model water recipes specific to each country, developed on the basis of detailed tests of geothermal water sources.

Workpackages

The work plan of Geo4Food is based on contributions of experiences from partners and presents innovative approach to freshwater production for agri-food chain using geothermal aquifers as water and energy source.

  1. Mapping and characterization of geothermal resources and agricultural areas (Poland and Turkey).
  2. Treatment of geothermal brine.
  3. Utilization of treated geothermal water for plant irrigation.
  4. Geothermal water and energy resources for agri-food chain - economy, ecology and energy analyses.
